If you are anything like us when you heard about Google+, all you could like was:

Seriously another social site? I don’t have time. I don’t wait to get into it. I don’t care!

But, we’re here to tell you Google Plus is fantastic. And can be a wonderful tool for your real estate business.

So the good news for most people is that Google+ is like Twitter and Facebook in many ways.

The problem is G+ was built to be a Facebook and Twitter killer. And it has the ability to become that. Definitely not saying it will, but it certain could

One of the best things going for Google Plus right now is that most people still spend such a larger amount of time on Google. Whether that’s using search, Gmail, Google Docs, etc. So, with all that time already invested, why go to another website to get social?

Let’s review some basic features of Google Plus that can impact your real estate business.

Google+ Profile Page

The profile page on Google Plus is fantastic. It’s more robust than Twitter’s, and has a slight edge on Facebook’s. Within your Google+ Profile you can have links, photos, maps, QR Codes and more.

On your websites and blogs, yous about page is crucial. The same thing applies to your social sites.

Circles In Google+

Using Google+ circles for Real Estate

There was a lot of push back from some about Circles in the beginning. Those were mainly the same people that didn’t utilize Groups in Facebook or Lists on Twitter.

Personally, I love Circles. I’m not always the most organized person, so i appreciate that Google makes me organize my social graph to be more manageable. Circles makes it easy to categorize friends, family, colleagues, etc.

We say embrace this new level of organization, by setting up a database of sorts for different Real Estate catagories you might have, such as:

  • First Time Home Buyers
  • Buying in the next year
  • Past Clients
  • XYZ neighborhood (niche)
  • Bike Club (niche)
  • Industry News/Thought Leaders
  • Open House Prospects

It shouldn’t take you too long to understand the power in this. Now you are only sharing pertinent content with those that will care, but this allows for a new, more strategic level of marketing.

The feature we’re still the most excited about is Hangouts. A Google Hangout is simple a group video chat. This is the first time multiple people have been able to utilize video chat in such a seamless and effective way.

The possibilities for real estate are limitless. Use the Hangout feature to chat face to face with a relocation client, with your client and their lender/spouse/parents/etc.

Hangouts (live multi-user video chats) works with Google Translate to faciliate multi-language instant communication. Neither Skype nor Facetime do that. The live video chat feature is a powerful addition to your business, and one we’d highly recommend you implement.

    I think it’s far too early to tell how G+ will affect social media as a whole, let alone the real estate vertical. There are just too many variables involved:

    1) Not everyone has a Google/GMail account, which is necessary to use G+;
    2) Not everyone WANTS to learn a new SM network;
    3) Not everyone has the TIME to learn a new SM network, unless they give up one they currently use;
    4) It’s going to be difficult to lure over 700 million users away from Facebook and/or Twitter;
    5) Of the hundreds of clients we have worked with and are currently working with, NONE are currently on G+. In fact, they are only now beginning to use Facebook, so their migration to G+ may not be happening any time soon!
    6) Even if clients DO move to G+ in large numbers, what value will they get from doing so over Facebook, or even over going to our blog/web site? What value proposition for RE does G+ bring to the table, other than Hangouts (which is still unclear, IMHO)?

    There are probably other factors involved as well, but these are all I can think of at the moment. I’m sure G+ will become a major player in the SM arena, and we were early adopters of the platform, but it will be interesting to see how people use it and how it adapts in the months ahead.

      Thank you so much for your thoughts.

      I think you’re right to say not everyone has a Gmail/Google account, however I don’t know a single person has never used Google to search. I think as the platform continues to grow it will begin to creep into search, which will drive more users.

      Also, I think many are forgetting Friendster, Myspace… AOL anyone? All these and many others have had mass appeal, and huge numbers, only to be toppled. Heck even Google has lost some of its search market share, so I wouldn’t be too quick to say giants can’t fall.

      I recently bought a home, and many in my demographic are doing the same. I’d say that you’re definitely on point by saying those you’ve sold to in the past 2+ years might not, but going forward your target demo is only getting younger. And their adoption will be greater.

      Question 6 is an interesting one. The value that something brings is always based on what the receiver perceives it to be. So if your website/blog/Facebook/G+/etc interaction is poor, it won’t matter what platform you’re on. And as a side note, Hangouts has been great for team meeting and client discussions for me alone, so I think the value is there.

      I think by merely ending your comment with a link to your G+ account, you’ve proven it has power. Why not link me to your website, FB, Twitter?

      I think Google has a chance, and big one if they play it right, and I think it’s important for Realtors looking for a better platform, especially those that don’t like FB, to give it a try.

        Chase, thanks for your reply. You bring up some good points, but consider this: Facebook currently has more users than Friendster, MySpace and AOL had at their peaks, combined. About four times as many. That’s a lot of eyeballs, and a lot of minds to convince that G+ will become the granddaddy of all social media networks. I just don’t think that there will be a mass exodus of users from the familiarity of Facebook to the gregariousness of G+. Far more likely will be that G+ will attract those who have not as yet dived into the online social scene, and that there will be a good number of Facebook users who will add G+ to their already strained social media schedule. As a result, their Facebook time will be reduced as they devote more time to learning the ins and outs of G+. Some will try it and retreat to Facebook; others will try to maintain a presence on both. And, there will probably be a considerable number who will defect to the Dark Side and revel in G+’s Circles and Sparks. I just don’t think it will be in the hundreds of millions. I think the big surge in users will come when they make business profiles available, as I know quite a few Realtors – myself included – who are quite interested in seeing what they will be like and what we’ll be able to do with them. However, my feeling is that my wife and I have invested a considerable amount of time and effort into developing our Facebook presence, and we will be resistant to abandoning it altogether, as I’m sure other agents will, too. For me, G+ will have to totally reinvent the social media space for business before I’ll give up the FB ghost. The one thing that might throw a monkey wrench into the works is time. Or, more specifically, a lack of time. If maintaining profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and G+ become so time consuming that they begin eating into income-producing activities, then something will have to give. And also keep in mind that, in addition to those 4 networks, many others are also deep into other networks like Empire Avenue, Stik, Branch Out,
        Plaxo, Zolve, eCademy, Active Rain, RealTown, and the list goes on. I think if G+ grows its ranks appreciably, it will be at the expense of the B and C list networks, not the current king of the mountain. Of course, I could be wrong!

        I know this is a long comment, but let me just wrap up by saying that I know that, as a real estate agent, it would be a strategic mistake to totally ignore G+, which is why I was an early adopter. It’s not that I think G+ is a FB killer, it’s simply that G+ will be another way for our prospective clients to find us, and with the backing of a powerhouse like Google, it’s a no-brainer to have a presence there. Time will tell where it will lead.

        And thanks for the kind words about our G+ profile! Much of it was already in place on our Google profile and Google Places, the rest I fleshed out after reading some posts about maximizing the profile. Thanks for listening to this ramble!
